The Sunny Side of Winter

Growing and drying organic sunflowers for our chickens this winter in 3 Easy Peasy Super Simple Steps.

Step 1. Plant sunflower seeds and watch them grow and grow and grow. 10 feet tall to be exact.

Step 2. Once the petals have dried and the back of sunny’s head is turning yellow/brown, cut the stem about 8 inches below the head and hang the sunflowers in a dry and cool space to fully dry, for about 3-4 weeks.

Step 3. Take the dried seeds out to feed or place the whole sunflower head into the chicken run.

Sunflower seeds and Flock Perfect Chicken Dance Grubs can give your chickens an extra boost of protein during the late fall/early winter molt as well as consistent protein during the winter months as hours of daylight lessen and egg laying slows. Both delicacies are on demand in Timeless Acres winter coop.

Bon appétit!
