It's that time of year when an intact male goat's attention turns from eating mass quantities of lush pasture and hay, playfully enjoying his pasture companion, Luca, and affectionately interacting with his humans to sheer testosterone driven desire to do one thing...THE One Thing.
This is Patrick, our herd sire at Timeless Acres.
Patrick and his buddy Luca. Luca is a wether, (nuetered goat) and is as sweet as sweet can be.
Dairy goats are seasonal breeders, meaning, a female goat (doe) will go into heat every 21 days from August to January-ish and bucks will be in rut through those same months. Rut is characterized by increased testosterone levels, increased interest in does (and sometimes female humans) and rut can also lead to increased aggression in some bucks.
Our Patrick in rut is much like the affectionate Patrick not in rut...x50. His increased seeking you out for attention and rubbing his head on your leg, arm, hip, any body part really, is kinda cute...until you realize that you are being rubbed by a urine soaked goat head.
That's right, bucks will also urinate on their faces during rut because this is super sexy to a doe. And super unsexy to everyone else. And as you can imagine, it's stinky.
Which is why overalls and coveralls are a must when going into the boys barn area during this season. And for this job, I always bring out my Rosie's. Both the overalls and coveralls are light enough to wear at end of summer and tough enough for anything. Those overalls go on and come off with that smell contained to that article of clothing. Unfortunately, that smell will linger wherever those overalls and coveralls are hanging, usually the garage.
And there is one more thing that happens when a buck is in rut. He makes a lot of gestures with his mouth, again, super sexy to the does. These include lip curling, puckering up, tongue wagging, licking...etc. etc. etc.
I'm too sexy for this farm, too sexy for this farm...so sexy by my barn.
