Said no one who ever had a goat(s).
We have learned an awful lot in the past few years about what goats like, don’t like and what they will demand more of. We quickly learned this upon bringing home our first goats and providing them, what we believed, was good hay. It smelled good, it looked good. Apparently, it was not good enough for the goats who walked away from it day after day and instead lived on pasture. Which is OK, for a while, but goats are ruminants and must also have dry matter to help them digest all things. Hay=Dry Matter.
So began our travels down the long and winding road into learning more about what goats like and more so, how can we make goat approved hay on our little homestead .
Along the way, we heard several differing opinions from well meaning folks that mostly amounted to, “Those goats are spoiled.” What?! Um, maybe. Ok, they probably are.
We believe that what you eat has a direct impact on your overall mental and physical health, humans and animals alike.
We do our best, most days, to eat a diet that is balanced, low in processed foods and is organic as able and for sure organic when consuming the Dirty Dozen and most of all, that also tastes good. That being said, why wouldn’t we apply the same philosophy for our farm family? We do. And oddly, it makes my heart immensely happy to see our animals thoroughly enjoying their feed, grains, kibble, scratch, hay….
Which brings me to this morning, introduction of New Country Organic Goat Minerals. This is Stella, our Herd Queen, who tried them first, because The Queen ALWAYS goes first. She had her head in that free choice mineral feeder for Over. 5. Minutes. And the rest of our herd soon followed her lead. We are happy to say, New Country Organic Goat Minerals are goat approved! And the next day, both the girls' and boys' mineral feeders where almost empty and that is a first with any mineral we have ever used before.
And this is my heart.
We also added New Country Organic Goat Pellets a few months ago, also goat approved, and the minerals are a great compliment. We feel very fortunate to be able to feed our animals this way at this time.
As we continue down that winding road, we are currently making plans for spring seeding of our hayfield with more palatable grasses to ensure that we can continue to spoil our goats.
